Welcome to The Discovery Academy
I am delighted to welcome you to The Discovery Academy website and hope the information provided here will give you a flavour of the exciting educational opportunities we provide for all our students. The £21 million building provides world class facilities and an environment which inspires students of all abilities and interests, to achieve and succeed. Our highly qualified and professional staff are committed to delivering the highest standards of expert teaching and learning and our pastoral support team ensure that the needs of every individual student are catered for.
Visitors to the Academy are always impressed by the pride students have in themselves and the professionalism of staff. Ofsted visited the academy in October 2016 and judged leadership, quality of teaching, personal development, behavior and welfare of our students as good.. Our aim at the Academy is to encourage students to ‘Expect Excellence’ in everything that they do and we foster a culture of growth mindset that gives students the confidence and ambition for the future. With dedicated staff who can provide the necessary support and care, I believe all students can develop the skills to become successful.
The Academy engages with parents/carers and students to acquire views on what we need to do together, so the Academy can go from strength to strength. We already have some notable success and below are the key improvements the Academy has made around achievement, teaching, behaviour and attendance. Too often, young people and adults have a fixed mindset that talent is limited and only a few have the skills to succeed. This is a myth we want to remove and it is our job together, to provide the confidence and belief that all students can overcome obstacles and succeed, however difficult it might be at times.
I am looking forward to working with parents/carers on the future journey of The Discovery Academy. We have incredible students who deserve the very best. Working together and with an uncompromising growth mindset, we will build an academy that the community is proud of.

Do you know where your child is, with whom and what they are doing?
As we approach the holiday period especially please can I remind parents to reinforce to all their children the importance of being vigilant over personal safety both in terms of their physical security as well as their virtual safety when accessing the internet/social media sites? There are some very unpleasant characters in the world and as many parents already do, we need to ensure that the safety of our children remains a priority both when in sight as well as out of sight. Useful links for further information on helping to sustain safety in the virtual world and more generally include:
Two of our Year 7 science groups were involved in a STEAM event (science, technology, engineering, art and maths) on Friday. They designed and made a glider with the aim to get the glider to travel the furthest. The winning teams will now compete against other schools at RAF Cosford.
Well done to all students involved and the staff that organised the event.
Some of our students have been selected to attend a visit to the University College Oxford on 28th February. This is an excellent opportunity for our students to meet their students, learn about university applications, tour the University College and to experience a little of university life.
They will have a welcome talk, tour of the college with Q&A session and also an academic session based on either a taster classroom session or a university museum trip.
On 20/03/2017 at 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm
Some of our students will be performing in the annual Stoke School Sport Partnerships Dance Extravaganza at the Victoria Hall on Monday 20th March 2017. The event will include primary, special, secondary schools, academies and colleges from across Stoke-on-Trent to demonstrate, through the medium of dance, their interpretation of ‘Dance Through the Decades’.
The performance will start at 6.30pm and finish at approximately 8.30pm. Tickets are available, a maximum of two per performer at a cost of £6.00 each. (There are no concessions, however, under 2’s are free but must sit on parent’s knee.) The Dance Extravaganza will be professionally filmed by Bomark Studio and a DVD will be available to purchase at a cost of £12.00. To order tickets and a copy of the DVD please complete the form attached.
Your child will be attending a dress rehearsal at the Victoria Hall at 11.00am on the day of the performance. They will be transported by coach to the Victoria Hall and then return to the Academy at approximately 12.15pm.
Parents are required to ensure that their child is brought to the Victoria Hall by 6.00pm on the evening of the performance. All performers will be seated in the stalls with their teacher, whilst parents/carers will be seated in the circles. Parents are asked to collect their child at the end of the evening from the stage door (please be aware that it is extremely busy at the end of the evening and parents should make themselves known to staff before taking their child).
